When I attended an English course at the British Institute , about seventeen years ago , I had a mother – tongue English teacher, who studied English and German at University in Palermo, albeit , as it often chances , stress was placed upon the first language – which in her case was English , whilst the second , in her case German, was rather or – to bestow a better expressure upon it – comparatively neglected .

Answering her German questions , we made efforts , in order not to let that strange language be felt as a nuisance by the rest of the class .
She told that she had commenced to study hard german , because she had to make ere long German exams at University .She added that, far from being dumbfounded , we had to admire her skills .
She asseverated that it was her who ruled in that class , since she was the teacher. In a class where a teutonic language was taught another teutonic tongue had not to be looked upon as being out of place , nay it had to be practised hilariously and mirthfully .
Nevertheless – and I think those who did not understand German felt relieved –
she soon grew weary of German , beginning again to talk English .
Thenceforward she, never more talking German , yea not any other tongue but English , gave us the opportunity to make a useful and profitable English course .
